What is the Student Recreation and Wellness Center?
Passed by a student referendum in the 2011-2012 academic year by an overwhelming majority of students the Recreation and Wellness Center is a building central to the continued campus development at UMSL. It will provide approximately 99,000 square feet of space for open recreation, intramural sports, and wellness education.
What amenities will be included in the Recreation and Wellness Center?
As the Recreation and Wellness Center is being built at the request of the student body, it is important to know that student input helped to shape the amenities available in the building. Currently, the following amenities are planned to be in the building:
- 3 Lane Jogging Track
- 3 Court Gymnasium
- 4 Group Fitness Rooms
- Climbing Wall
- Fitness/Recreation Pool with Lap Lanes, Zip Line, Aquatic Climbing Wall and Whirlpool
- Pro Shop
- Juice Bar
Who will be able to use the Student Recreation and Wellness Center?
All currently enrolled students will be able to use the facility by showing their Triton Card. Faculty, staff, and alumni will also be able to use the facility by paying a membership fee, which will be competitive with local health clubs in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. In addition, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center will create student employment opportunities each academic year.
When will the Student Recreation and Wellness Center open for use?
Since the student led Referendum in March 2012, and subsequent University approval, design and construction will begin. The design phase of the project is currently underway and is anticipated at 9 – 12 months. Construction will take between 18 – 24 months. The projected opening of the building is in Fall 2015.
Where will the Student Recreation and Wellness Center be located?
The University plans for the construction of the Recreation and Wellness Center south of the Millennium Student Center. This location will assist in framing a campus quadrangle around the ponds and provides a dramatic view of the surrounding architecture and landscape while offering a centralized location for the UMSL community. The facility’s location, convenient to the UMSL campus population, will drive usage and it will provide an essential gathering place within the UMSL community.
How will the Student Recreation and Wellness Center impact parking on campus?
Located just beyond the surface lots, east of the Millennium Student Center are two parking structures, Millennium Garage South and Millennium Garage North. Millennium Garage South has 650 parking spaces and Millennium Garage North has 936 parking spaces accommodating a total of 1,586 vehicles within walking distance of the proposed Recreation and Wellness Center. There is sufficient parking capacity to accommodate current demands and future demand from the new facility.
What will this cost me, and when will the fee start?
Students will be charged $19.25/credit hour up to the maximum of 12 credit hours per semester and 6 credit hours in summer in addition to the then current recreation fee starting with the summer 2015 session.
